Check out this creative idea for youth groups that want to help solve the issue of homelessness:

PRESS RELEASE

Youth Organize Cardboard City to Bring Attention to Homelessness

JUNE 24 – Youth from Youth Voice, One Vision and Youth as Resources have joined forces to coordinate “Cardboard City Lock-out.” During this event, youth will create a “city” out of cardboard and spend the night outside in this city. The event is being organized in order to bring attention to the issue of youth homelessness in Rochester and Monroe County, as well as collect donations for local homeless youth.

The Cardboard City Lock-out will take place at Cobb's Hill Park from Thursday August 13th until Friday August 14th. Donations will start being accepted at local recreation centers on July 6th. The youth have decided to ask for gently used clothing in an array of sizes, shoes, and hygiene products for donations. A “penny war” will also be taking place at local pizza shops including Mark's Pizzeria and Pontillo's. There will be donation jars at these locations where customers can donate their change. All donations will be used to purchase hygiene products for the Hillside Alternatives for Independent Youth and the Salvation Army Genesis House. Youth Voice, One Vision and Youth as Resources are looking for other businesses and agencies to host Penny Wars or a donation collection box.
